Sammys cosplays is one of the largest cosplayers in the Netherlands with more than 130 thousand followers on Instagram. She travels all over the world to practise her cosplay. We had a conversation with her about how she started, the cosplay community, HDCC and much more.
Sammy came for the first time in contact with the art of cosplay almost five years ago at Heroes Dutch Comic Con. Immediately she knew that cosplay would be her thing. So directly afterwards she started making her first costume with her mother. Now almost four years later she became one of the largest cosplayers in the Netherlands.
Sammy believes that the reason why her cosplays are so special is because of the love and passion she has for each character she cosplays. Therefore, she would never make the character prettier than they are. Additionally, this passion is also the reason why she always put in the smallest details of each character.
Sammy as well got the chance to travel all over the world due to her cosplay. For instance, she travelled to Turkey, Cyprus, Japan, and France. ‘’This is something you will never get used to’’ is what she mentioned on this topic. ‘’ It is so cool that I got to make friends with the same passion all over the world. This is a dream for many people and I am proud that it came true for me’’.
However, where does this love for cosplay come from? Her love for cosplay comes forth from her passion for films and anime. That is as well a reason why she loves to cosplay so much because she can truly investigate the characters that she does. Nevertheless, another thing she enjoys about cosplay is meeting people with the same passions. ‘’ It is so much fun to see cosplayers with characters you love as well.’’ That is why she also mentions that the cosplay community is her favourite thing about cosplaying. ‘’ It is a group where all misfits come together and accept each other.’’
That is as well what she loves most about HDCC: ‘’ It’s a place where the whole Dutch cosplay community unites’’. You can meet people with the same interests, and you can walk around with no shame. Everyone loves different things at the event; however, you will always be hyped up by everyone.
Finally, she also wanted to tell her biggest tip, namely: ‘’ Don’t be afraid’’. Do not be afraid to make mistakes, that people will not get the art of cosplay, or that they do not know your favourite character. ‘’ Life is too short to not try new things’
