Steve Pugh was born and raised in the West Midlands of the UK, and mostly stays indoors. Consumed by drawing since being a child, Steve’s break into comics came by posting the editor of Grimjack an envelope stuffed with drawings at exactly the right moment, with Steve being given a four issue mini series to draw as his very first professional comic work. From there He jumped over to DC to work on books such as Hellblazer and Animal man, and then at Marvel, pencilling Doom 2099.
After an adventure in creator owned books, where Steve wrote and painted for two premium titles, Shark-man and Hotwire, He returned to the mainstream with his second successful run on Animal-man for DC Comics new 52 revival of the character.
Once known for brutal, even ugly, horror based works such as Saint of Killers, Steve took a sudden turn towards humour with the highly lauded reinterpretation of The Flintstones, and a return to full colour art in Harley Quinn : Breaking Glass, both nominated for multiple Eisner awards.
A return to creator owned books also saw him reunite with his Flintstones writer to create the Billionaires Island series of stories, and last year Steve’s Peacemaker limited series caught a huge wave of good will from readers and became an unexpected breakout book for DC’s Black Label imprint.
So what’s next?! we can’t say… contractually… they just never let you… also how is Hotwire still not a movie, c’mon people, have you seen it?!
